Gainesville meditation centers hold healing practices in new ways

When Debi and Bob Kolb started dating, their Friday dates always ended with meditations at the Gainesville Retreat Center.

The couple planned to get married at the center in January after being engaged for two years until the COVID-19 pandemic changed their plans.

Rather than a ceremony outdoors amid burning incense and candles, the two married at Bo Diddley Plaza. They didn’t want the elegance of fine china, but the elegance of simple clarity, Bob Kolb said.

“Let us vow to remember that all that appears, will disappear in the midst of uncertainty,” their vows read.

Despite the shifts in their circumstances, the two said Zen Buddhism offered them solace.

Through the pandemic and political strife, many have discovered sitting and existing in stillness soothes their occupied minds. Gainesville’s meditation centers Karuna Cottage, ChayVeda Integrative Ayurvedic Healing Arts and Gainesville Retreat Center have similarly seen a pique in interest.

Migraine
Credit: Sasha Wolff/Wikipedia

Migraine is a neurological disease that can be severely debilitating and is the second leading cause of disability worldwide. Unfortunately, many patients with migraine discontinue medications due to ineffectiveness or side effects. Many patients still use opioids despite recommendations against them for headache treatment. However, in a recent clinical trial from Wake Forest Baptist Health, researchers showed that mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) may provide benefit to people with migraine.

“Mindfulness-based stress reduction is a mind-body treatment that teaches moment-by-moment awareness through mindfulness meditation and yoga,” said Rebecca Erwin Wells, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of neurology at Wake Forest School of Medicine, part of Wake Forest Baptist Health. “Mindfulness can also teach new ways to respond to stress, a commonly reported migraine trigger.”

According to an article published by JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers studied whether MBSR improved migraine outcomes, pain perception and measures of emotional well-being compared

Water Cooler: How meditation changes the brain

Meditation made its way from spiritual practice to a secular, pop culture-fueled lifestyle trend, but despite all its evolution and appropriation, many psychologists and researchers still think it can have a substantial and beneficial impact on the human brain.

One primary challenge to observing meditation within psychological trials and studies is that it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what meditation means given its long history and varied cross-cultural uses.

The earliest written documentation of meditation is from 1500 B.C.E., found in the Vedas, a body of religious texts and Hindu scripture of ancient India. It later spread to other Asian countries. Judaism and Islam had meditation practices that grew in prominence around the Middle Ages. Eastern and Western Christians also had their own versions. Meditation became a popular topic among Western intellectuals during the 18th century and by the mid-to-late 19th century, transcendentalists began to popularize aspects of Hindu

What is Midas Manifestation?

Anyone that brings up the idea of manifestation is almost instantly discredited since so many people have been taught to believe only what they can physically put their hands on. Interestingly, if the manifestation is done correctly, that’s exactly what the user gets – something that they can tangibly feel the evidence of. Manifestation has been a concept that cultures have embraced worldwide for centuries, finding the impossible hidden within the world’s unarguable facts.

Take the universe, for example. There is so much more than

Iconic ‘Ghana Must Go’ bag gets refashioned as a meditation on migration

At first glance, the photos look like something out of a fashion magazine — glamorous models wearing beautiful, structured clothes with towering, elaborate head wraps and hats on their heads.

But look closer, and you might notice something else: These clothes are made of plastic bags.

Specifically, they’re made from a plaid, woven plastic bag iconic in West Africa and worldwide. Regionally, they’re known as the “Ghana Must Go” bag. In his photography project “Anyi N’Aga” —  or “We Are Going” in Igbo, one of the languages of Nigeria, New York-based Nigerian photographer Obinna Obioma transforms these bags into a powerful narrative about migration.
